Wanted
A Junior Assistant Master, Unmarried and under the age of 30.
The applicant must be either a trained certificated master, or a Graduate with at least two years practical experience in teaching in a school.
The appointment to be made or confirmed by the Secretary of State for the Colonies, Downing Street.
Duties.
To teach Chinese boys (and boys of other nationalities, British, Portuguese, Indian, &c.) the usual subjects required for an Elementary Education: English Reading, Dictation, Grammar, Composition and Arithmetic.
School hours.
9--1.30 five days in the week; 2.30-4.30 two afternoons and on Saturdays 9--12.
Vacations,
One calendar month in both Winter and Summer (February and August.) on full pay. The School vacations occurring during absence on half pay leave, however, will be on half pay only.
Salary.
£270 rising to £860 by triennial increments of £30. In Hongkong the salary is payable in dollars at a rate declared each month by the Treasury.
Leave.
At the end of six years' service, each master is entitled to twelve months leave, the first three months of which are on Full Pay the remainder on Half Pay.
Pension,
At the age of 55, or after 10 years' service if the Medical Board certify retirement necessary on account of mental or physical disability, the master can retire on Pension at the following rate: one-sixtieth of salary for every year's Full Pay service, to which five sixtieths are added for Foreign Service. The payment of the full pension will only be made if the officer is certified to have discharged his duties with diligence and fidelity to the satisfaction of the Head of his Department.
Passage.
An Officer on his first appointment will be required to enter into an agreement to refund the cost of his passage to the Colony in the event of his relinguishing his appointment within 3 years of his appointment. If Masters are sent out from England a Second Class Passage by Mail Steamer will be provided at the expense of the Government, and the same rate of passage will be allowed for their return at the expiration of the term of agreement untess the continuar tion of their service bu mutually desired--
Widows and Orphans Fund.
4 per cent of the salary is, by Ordinanco, deducted as a contribution for the support of the above fund.
Cost of Living.
Food and clothes are not dear in Hongkong as compared with England. House rent is very high; but bachelors can lodge with private families or form Messes with friends, when the expenses should prove moderate.
Private Pupils.
Masters may take private pupils under special circumstances and with the express permission of the Governing Body.
Promotion
Promotion to the Senior Grade, when opportunity may offer, will be regulated by a consider- ation of the personal merits of the Junior Masters,
